Hitting Stationary Objects

A DRIVER’S STORY A truck driver pulling a double-deck car hauler-trailer was driving on a state road near Rockford, Illinois, when he approached an old railroad bridge. This route was new to the driver, and the bridge height was not clearly marked. He knew the clearance of his trailer at full height but didn’t take into consideration the height of the vehicles on the upper deck. When he approached the bridge, a red flag went off in his head, warning him that he may not have enough clearance. Still, he knew it was impossible to turn around, and a few impatient cars were lined up behind him. So, the driver threw caution to the wind and decided to proceed. He slowed down and approached the bridge cautiously, inching closer and closer until he realized he couldn’t clear the hazard. The driver stopped and waved the other vehicles past. Fortunately for him, the last car stopped and offered to help with traffic control so the truck driver could back up safely to the nearest intersection less than a mile away.
